ANNOUNCING
PROTECTIVE MOTHERS /
CHILD CUSTODY
AWARENESS NIGHT
Scheduled for
the evening of October 5th, 2006
(to coincide with Domestic Violence Month)
You and/or your
organization are asked to CO-SPONSOR this national
awareness-raising grassroots event (flyer attached).
Announcing a national,
grass roots initiative: A one-night showing of two
documentaries that
address the injustices inflicted on battered mothers within the context
of the family
court/divorce court systems:
Small Justice (Garland Waller, producer)
and
Breaking the Silence: Children's Stories (Tatge-Lasseur
Productions;
www.tatgelasseur.com)
This national showing will include two segments
drawn from these two superb exposes on the problems
facing battered mothers in their attempts to gain custody of, and
protection for, their children.
Why: A similar one-night showing of the anti-Walmart movie,
"The High Cost of Low Prices," was held
last fall. Coordinated by Move-on.org, the event was immensely
successful. (Three showings held in my
own area were completely filled up--there was not even standing room
left!)
What are we trying to accomplish?
1.
We want to use these professionally produced documentaries to expose to
the general public the
legal realities faced by battered women;
2.
We want to educate family law attorneys and others who work
professionally and as advocates for
battered women within the family court/divorce court legal systems
3. We
want to provide outreach, information, and networking opportunities to
victims, especially those lacking support systems and services in their
communities;
4.
We want to maximize networking and information sharing among
professional and para-professionals
concerned with battered women's custody issues.
5.
We want to further build our movement of battered mothers who have been
victimized by family court
practices.
As a Co-Sponsor of the Battered Mothers Child
Custody Awareness Event, your organization's
name and contact information will be posted on the web site that is
devoted to the event:
www.stopfamilyviolence.org/296
As a co-sponsor, you are asked to do two things:
1. Hold
at least one showing of the one-hour long documentary film in your
community on the evening of
October 5th, 2006.
2. Publicize
the event widely. Ask the groups, organizations, and individuals in
your network of contacts
to sponsor a public, no-charge showing of the documentaries in their own
communities on the same evening.
The idea is to have as many showings going on in as many different
communities as possible throughout the
country on the same evening.
Showings may be scheduled in any number of community
settings: meeting halls, libraries, on campuses,
or even in private homes. Co-Sponsors, as well as anyone else who agrees
to schedule and hold a showing
in their community, will receive the copy of the dvd plus will have
access to resources, including talking
points, an information sheet with web site addresses, a reading list, and
other information mothers involved
in custody litigation with abusive partners, which can be downloaded from
our web site.
If you wish to be listed as a co-sponsor of this event,
please go to the web site to provide us
with information on you/your group:
www.stopfamilyviolence.org/296
Information on showings will be
posted on this web site as we receive it, over the course of the next few
months and up until Oct. 6th. This will allow information those who are
interested in attending a showing to
locate the one nearest them.
